So this is the time of year you're supposed to reflect and set goals for the new year right? Ok, I am good with that. And upon very minor reflection, I have come to the obvious realization that .. I suck as a runner. Gasp, I know, but it's true. In a typical triathlon I am one of the first out of the water, hold my own on the bike, then everyone and their chain-smoking 80 year old grandma passes me on the run. It is very demoralizing.
Each year I pick one specific athletic goal- maybe it's running a marathon, riding a century, or doing a 12 hour adventure race. For 2011, I need to go shorter and faster if I am ever going to be able to contest for at least an age-group podium in a triathlon. So my goal for 2011 is to run, one time, a 5K in under 20 minutes.
My best 5K as an adult is 22:31, run about 5 years (and 15 pounds) ago. So I have some work to do. My plan is to include a 5K race every weekend in 2011 as part of my training plan until I break 20 (along with track, long and recovery runs, as well as triathlon cross training on the bike and in the pool, and some better eating).
My first race is in 4 hours ... at midnight, Jan 1. What better way to kick things off? Check back to see how I do..
1/1/2011 Edit: I went 25:55. So just need to drop about 8 seconds every week and I'll be under 20 minutes by sometime next Fall!
