What I'm Reading: The Calculus Diaries

The Calculus Diaries I'm currently reading The Calculus Diaries by Jennifer Ouellette.  First heard about it on Science Friday a few weeks ago.  The premise is how the author applied calculus to "everything from gas mileage and dieting to Disneyland rides and shooting craps".

I learned that the word "algebra" comes from the Arabic word "al-jabr" which means "restoring", coined by an Arab mathematician who developed the process of simplifying an equation by performing actions on both sides, which he called "comparing and restoring".
